Obtaining Travel Assistance for the Elderly

When traveling with an elderly parent or other companion, there are certain plans that need to be made ahead of time to ensure that all goes as planned.  Travel assistance for the elderly is available through travel agencies, airlines, cruises, hotels and other vacation agencies.  This travel assistance for the elderly means that they need to have certain medical resources available in some cases, while in other cases, it might mean that they need transportation back to the hotel for a nap each afternoon while on the trip.  In other cases, they might need wheelchair assistance in order to go on ‘hikes’ or to make connections from one flight to another.

Other Concerns

Obtaining travel assistance for the elderly means that airports will need to be contacted ahead of time to make sure that the staff is alerted to the particular needs of that individual.  They might need to make the connection times longer so that there is more time to get from one gate to the other.  They might need to have personnel escort the person from one gate to another in a vehicle that will get them there sooner.  Travel assistance for the elderly might also mean that their seat is in an area where they can easily get up and stretch once in awhile to increase the circulation in their legs and prevent clotting from occurring.

Another part of obtaining travel assistance for the elderly is in regards to their health care.  Some health care plans do not give coverage when overseas.  If the elderly person has a Medicare plan or if they use an HMO, they are not likely to have any coverage when going to another country.  When this is the case, part of obtaining travel assistance for that elderly person is to get some travel insurance which will fill in the medical gaps that are left by their current insurance plans.  This travel insurance should fill in any accident or illness medical needs that they might have on the trip, including emergency care and prescriptions.  Some of the travel insurance plans will also include coverage over lost baggage or over tickets for flights that get cancelled for some reason or another.

The main part of obtaining travel assistance for the elderly is to make sure there is enough time to get from one place to another.  It is also important to give them enough time to rest when on the trip so that they can enjoy the different sights without getting worn out.
